Modern and Asian Elements for the Home
Grosse Pointe Farms, MI – Stefek’s autumn season will begin with its upcoming auction of Modern and Asian Elements for the Home. The auction will be held on Thursday, September 29, 2016 starting at 3:00 p.m. EST and will feature an array of quality pieces from several categories. Bidders are welcome to attend in person, to register as a telephone or absentee bidder, or to bid online at LiveAuctioneers.com.
Stefek’s has the privilege of offering a Louise Nevelson assemblage piece titled “Throne” (estimate $35,000 – 40,000). As opposed to other currently available Louise Nevelson works, which feature her typical monochromatic black aesthetic, this piece offers a slightly different perspective with additional elements of blue and red paint, while still serving as an example of her signature puzzle-like assemblages. Another feature item seldom seen at auction is an exceptionally crafted vintage Patek Philippe 18k gold automatic wristwatch (estimate $8,000-10,000) with the original crocodile leather strap and 18k gold buckle. The wristwatch was manufactured in the early 1970s and features a round champagne brushed dial with roman numerals and a window for the date. The most notable decorative item is a Murano glass vase (estimate $10,000 – 12,000) by famed Venetian glass artist Lino Tagliapietra.
The mid-century modern pieces of note are from designers Edward Wormley, Neils Otto Moller, Charles Eames, Johannes Andersen, and Eleil Saarienen. One such piece is an Edward Wormley for Dunbar lounge chair (estimate $800 – 1,000) that features a laminate walnut frame with a caned back over brass feet and upholstered with ostrich leather. Another notable Dunbar piece includes an Edward Wormley “Long John” coffee table (estimate $800 – 1,000). The auction will feature a pair of shell chairs (estimate $1,200 – 2,200) designed by Charles Eames for Herman Miller. Bidders will be able to purchase a set of fire tools by Jacques Charles (estimate$1,500 -2,500), Jean-Paul Creations stainless steel andirons (estimate $500 – 700), a pair of Todd Young custom made chairs (estimate $500-700) and seven Niels Otto Moller dining chairs ($500-700) manufactured by Koefoeds-Hornslet.
Asian elements include furniture pieces such as a Chinese camphor wood compound cabinet (estimate $2,000 – 3,000) and Chinese rosewood dining suite (estimate $800-1,000). Furthermore, there is a selection of decorative items including Chinese export floral vase (estimates $200-300), Chinese carved jade vessel with cover (estimate $200 – 400), a pair of Japanese lotus candle prickets, and a set of four carved jade discs (estimate $300 -500). Finally, the auction is rounded out with Mazzega glass waterfall chandelier (estimate $7,000 – 9,000), a cast metal figural garden statue (estimate $2,000 – 3,000), and over ten lots of Gouda pottery with estimates ranging from $100 to $400.
