2017 marked a record-breaking year for the auction industry, proving that the secondary market is alive and well and there continues to be a high amount of interest in fine art and furniture. Basquiat’s 1982 painting Untitled sold for $110.5 million dollars at Sotheby’s in May of last year, becoming the highest-priced piece by a U.S. artist ever sold. November of 2017 followed up with a $450.3 million dollar sale at Christie’s of the recently-discovered da Vinci masterpiece Salvator Mundi, setting the world record for any work of art sold at auction in history.

Stefek’s has enjoyed the recent fervor of the auction market, finishing another highly successful year of global auctions of fine art, quality furniture, decorative items, precious jewelry, and more. It is already apparent that 2018 is continuing full steam ahead: our premier auction, which took place on Thursday, January 11th, 2018, inspired enthusiastic bidding and impressive hammer prices. Highlights of the evening included two lots of Abraham Bloemaert pencil studies, selling at the high end of their estimates for $9,225.00 USD each. An American Mahogany Hepplewhite Sewing Stand attributed to Matthew Egerton exceeded its estimate more than sevenfold, coming in at $4,674.00 USD.
