West Village is just minutes from downtown Detroit and the idyllic Belle Isle. It was so named in mid-20th century because of its location just west of better-known Indian Village. West Village was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. The community has an eclectic feel and includes a number of architectural styles including frame Queen Anne houses, and TudorColonial Revival, and Mediterranean Revival houses as well as Georgian Revival and Jacobean apartment buildings. West Village is also home to the Indian Village Tennis Club, a private membership club dating to 1912 which bills itself a “perfect tennis oasis in the city” with three beautifully maintained clay courts.

Historic Indian Village consists of three streets, Seminole, Iroquois, and Burns.  Most of the homes were designed by renowned architects, including Albert Kahn, Louis Kamper and William Stratton. The homes were built for prominent Detroiters such as Henry Leland, Arthur Buhl, Bernard Stroh, and J. Burgess Book. Many of the homes are large, with some over 12,000 square feet. Each year thousands come to Indian Village’s Garden Tour to enjoy the architecture- inside and out and to get a glimpse of some of the homes and their magnificent gardens. Indian Village was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972

If you have time, include both Indian Village and West Village to tour on your visit. The neighborhoods are filled with historic mansions, unique homes, and special places. When visiting West Village, you may want to check out some of the restaurants and eateries, including:
